Working in partnership with parents in supporting children's learning is a key strand in Children's Centre work. This one day course grows out of an international project called ‘Children Crossing Borders' which aimed to capture the voices of those parents who are often lacking the confidence to participate fully in dialogues about their children's learning and
development. The project findings tell us a lot about how hard it is for many parents to participate in equal and open dialogues with the settings their children attend.

This course will:
set out a rationale for, and benefits of, encouraging more equitable and symmetrical dialogues with parents;
explore some of the issues that prevent parents from speaking and actively participating;
demonstrate some practical skills and competencies that professionals need to establish symmetrical dialogues, such as
active listening, conflict resolution and value congruence;
offer some practical techniques to stimulate symmetrical dialogues, such as cultural circles, video-stimulated dialogues
and treasure baskets for adults.
