Beau Posted August 31, 2004 Share Posted August 31, 2004 I don't want to appear really stupid (no comments Sue R ) but I've been writing a new 'achievement record' document for my playgroup and wondered if there was a difference between sorting and grouping in mathematical terms? I'm in Scotland and our curriculum is slighty different. The curriculum point is 'Understand and use mathematical processes such as matching, sorting, grouping, counting and measuring' This seems to indicate that there is a difference. Help someone?? catma Posted August 31, 2004 Share Posted August 31, 2004 I think sorting is putting things that have a link together, eg all the circles and grouping is splitting up a bigger set, making sets with the same cardinal value, which can later be used in logarithms. eg grouping 20 into sets of 10 to see how many there are. Sorting creates the sets or groups. I do think though, Carol that you dont need to spend too much time emphasising a difference--unless thaeres anyone else out there that knows something different?
